Barry and the Most Amazing Thing

Text size

Barry was a little bear cub. He lived in a green forest. His fur was soft and brown. Barry loved to play. He loved to tumble. He loved to chase butterflies.

But Barry had a big idea. He wanted to find "The Most Amazing Thing." He heard the older bears talk. They talked about amazing honey trees. They talked about amazing berry patches. Barry wanted to find his own amazing thing. He wanted it to be big. He wanted it to be bright. He wanted it to be the most amazing thing in the whole forest.

One sunny morning, Barry set out. "Today is the day!" he thought. He felt very excited. His paws thumped on the soft earth. He looked left. He looked right. He peered behind trees.

He saw a tiny spider web. It hung between two leaves. Drops of morning dew sat on the web. They looked like tiny diamonds. They sparkled in the sun. "Pfft," Barry sniffed. "That’s not the most amazing thing. It’s too small!" He hurried past.

Next, Barry saw a line of ants. They were very busy. Each ant carried a crumb. One ant carried a crumb almost as big as itself! It walked so carefully. It worked very hard. "Pfft," Barry huffed. "Just a bunch of ants. Not amazing enough!" He rushed on, looking for something bigger.

He walked past a field of flowers. Red flowers. Yellow flowers. Blue flowers. A butterfly with orange wings sat on a purple flower. Its wings were very delicate. It blended right in. Barry hardly saw it. "Still nothing truly amazing!" he mumbled. He was going too fast. He wanted to find something BIG.

Barry walked and walked. The sun climbed high in the sky. He felt a little tired. He felt a little hot. He had not found anything big or bright. He had not found anything that shouted, "Here I am! I am the most amazing thing!"

He sighed a big bear sigh. "Where is it?" he wondered. "Maybe the forest does not have one." He felt a little bit sad. He sat down under a big oak tree. He leaned his back against the rough bark. He closed his eyes for just a moment.

When Barry opened his eyes, he looked up. He saw the leaves of the oak tree. They were green and wide. The sun shone through them. Little spots of sunlight danced on the ground. They looked like golden coins. They moved when the wind blew.

Barry had never really looked at the leaves before. He had always rushed past. He watched the light dance. It was quite pretty. He heard a little buzz. A bee flew from a flower. It zoomed past his nose. It went into a hole in the oak tree. The bee was very busy making honey.

Barry looked down at the ground. He saw a tiny ladybug. It had bright red wings. It had seven black spots. It walked slowly on a blade of grass. It waved its small antennae. "Hello, ladybug," Barry whispered. He watched it for a long time. The ladybug was very small, but it was beautiful.

Then, Barry heard a tiny squeak. He looked closer. A little beetle was on its back. Its tiny legs wiggled in the air. It could not turn over. "Oh dear!" Barry thought. He carefully reached out a paw. He gently pushed the beetle. Flip! The beetle was right side up again. It scuttled away quickly. Barry smiled. Helping the beetle felt good.

He looked around slowly. He was not rushing anymore. He saw a patch of berries. Not big, special berries. Just plain, everyday berries. But he looked at them closely. He saw that some were extra dark. They looked very plump. He had never stopped to really look at them before. He tried one. It was the sweetest berry he had ever tasted! "Wow!" he thought. "These were here all along!"

Barry kept looking. He saw a fluffy white cloud that looked like a friendly sheep. He heard a bird sing a happy song. He watched a tiny squirrel bury a nut. Each little thing made him smile.

He realized something important. The most amazing thing was not just one big thing. It was all the little things! It was the sparkling dew. It was the busy ants. It was the shy butterfly. It was the dancing sunlight. It was the brave ladybug. It was the sweet berries. It was even helping a tiny beetle.

Barry felt happy. A warm, peaceful happy. He didn't need to search far and wide anymore. The forest was full of amazing things. He just needed to take his time. He just needed to look closely.

When Barry went home, he told his mama bear all about his day. "I found the most amazing thing, Mama!" he said. "It was everything!"

Mama bear hugged him tight. "Yes, my cub," she rumbled softly. "The world is full of wonders. You just have to open your eyes and heart to see them." Barry knew she was right. From that day on, Barry still loved to play and explore. But now, he always took his time. He saw all the wonderful, amazing things that were right there, all around him, every single day.
